NOOKK Quick Start

Lock your files behind a physical key in about 5 minutes

1

Get your computer and tools ready

NOOKK is set up on a computer. Before you begin, make sure you have:

A computer running Windows 11 or macOS 14 or laterWindows 10 isn't supported. On Windows, you'll need administrator approval once during installation.
Your NOOKK KeyIf you have a second key, keep it nearby too
Pen and paper, or your PasswordPocketFor writing down the 24-word recovery phrase you'll get in step 4

Setup can't be done on a phone. Send this guide to your computer:

You'll also get NOOKK software updates and security notices. Unsubscribe anytime.
Never store your recovery phrase in the cloud, in phone notes, or anywhere it could be stolen.
2

Download and install the NOOKK app

Download the version for your computer:

Windows
1
Run the installer you downloaded
2
When Windows asks to allow changes, choose Yes — the disk driver NOOKK needs (Dokany) is installed too
3
NOOKK starts automatically and shows the welcome window
Mac
1
Open the DMG and drag NOOKK into the Applications folder
2
Open NOOKK from Applications — the welcome window appears

NOOKK has no main window and doesn't appear in the taskbar or Dock. Everything starts from the lock icon — in the system tray on Windows (click ^ if it's hidden), or on the right side of the menu bar on Mac:

Closed lock · NOOKK Drive is locked
Open lock · NOOKK Drive is unlocked
Tip: select Open at login in the welcome window, so you can unlock just by plugging in your key.
3

Create your NOOKK Drive

Click Create the first NOOKK Drive in the welcome window, or click the lock icon → Create a NOOKK Drive…

1
Plug in your NOOKK Key
2
Windows: choose where to store your NOOKK Drive (the default is fine), then click Create. A PIN is required — if your key doesn't have one yet, a Windows Security window will guide you.
Mac: click Create, then choose Use PIN (recommended) or Continue without PIN. A new PIN needs at least 4 digits; 8 is recommended.
3
When the key blinks, touch it — twice in total
On Windows, entering your PIN and touching the key happens in a Windows Security window. That's normal.
Something not working? Tap here for common causes
  • Can't find the lock icon: on Windows, click ^ in the system tray; on Mac, check the right side of the menu bar. Still missing? Reopen NOOKK
  • Windows says the disk driver can't be found: run the installer again, then restart your computer
  • Touch does nothing: check your PIN, touch the key while it's blinking, or unplug the key and try again
  • Still stuck: contact us and our team will reply as soon as possible on business days
4

Write down and confirm your recovery phrase (important)

You'll see 24 English words. Write them down in numbered order, then enter the 1 word you're asked for. Your NOOKK Drive is created and unlocks once it's correct.

🔑
Your recovery phrase is the only way back in if all your keys are lost Anyone who has these 24 words can open your NOOKK Drive — and no one, including us, can recover it for you.
Do
  • ✓ Write it on paper, including the numbers
  • ✓ Or save it to the Notes in your PasswordPocket
  • ✓ Keep it apart from your computer and key
Don't
  • ✕ Take a photo or screenshot
  • ✕ Store it on your computer, phone, or the cloud
  • ✕ Keep it with your key
⚠ Don't close the window before confirming. If you do, this NOOKK Drive won't be kept. (On Windows, closing once shows a warning; closing again cancels setup.)
5

Add a backup key (recommended)

Do this right after setup:

🛟
Keep two NOOKK Keys: one with you, one at home Lose one, and the other still opens your NOOKK Drive. Only have one? Get a backup key
1
Click the lock icon → Manage → Add a key, and touch your current key when asked
2
Plug in and touch the new NOOKK Key (on Mac, you may be asked to set a PIN)
3
Done — your recovery phrase stays the same, so there's no need to write it down again
✓

Your NOOKK is all set!

From now on: plug in your key and touch it to unlock — remove it to lock
